Google Expeditions are virtual, 3D field trips students can take using a cell phone and free software from Google. Think about the ViewMaster you might have had as a child, only the images are presented in a full 360 degree, wrap-around environment and you’ll get the idea. The goal of Expeditions is to place students in the environment they are studying as if they were really there. With hundreds of Expeditions to choose from, students can journey far and wide, learning from immersive new experiences. Teachers can also create their own, guided content. For example, a teacher visiting a museum could capture and present what they are seeing in a live-stream to students back in the classroom. Visual prompts, data points, descriptions, and audio can also be incorporated into the Expeditions.
We are enthusiastically working to bring this new technology to Anchorage students and would like to ask for your help in the process. For Expeditions to work, each student needs a headset (ViewMaster) and accompanying display. The display is a cell phone, and represents the greatest expense to the project as we will need 20 in order to assemble a classroom set. We are starting with acquiring that component of the project before purchasing the other needed equipment. That’s where you can make a difference.
Do you have an old cell phone that is not in use that you could donate to our Expeditions initiative? We wouldn’t need it for cellular service, but if the screen works, the unit holds a charge, and it can access a wifi network, we would love to accept your tax-deductible donation. We’ll even help you remove the SIM card if you don’t know how and reformat the device erasing all your personal information. After receiving your phone, we insert it into our ViewMaster headset, and the phone becomes the projection screen carrying students to all corners of Earth and beyond.
The following models are compatible with the Expeditions headsets: Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy Note5, Samsung Galaxy Note4, Motorola Nexus 6, Motorola Moto X (2014), Motorola Droid Turbo, LG G5, LG G4, LG G3, LG Nexus 5X, LG Nexus 5, HTC One, Huawei Nexus 6P, iPhone 6s plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5. Newer Android and iPhones may also work as long as the screens are between 5-6 inches.
Thank you for considering this powerful way to contribute to technology at Anchorage School. Your gently used phones are a perfect solution for bringing far away worlds into our classrooms.
